Join us for an immersive oil painting workshop designed for both beginners and experienced artists. Over the course of several days, we will explore everything from fundamental techniques, color theory, and brushwork and a unique approach through a limited palette, to advanced glazing and layering, focal points and finishing. In a hands on approach to creating our own masterpieces. Guided by an Andrew, you will receive personalized feedback and encouragement, allowing you to enhance your skills and express your creativity. All materials will be provided, ensuring a stress-free experience. Discover the joy of oil painting in a supportive environment, and leave with a finished piece to showcase your talent.

Workshop: Oil Painting with Andrew Swarbrick
Dates: March 28th-30th, 2025
Times: Friday 28th 1pm-8pm, Saturday 29th 10am-6pm, Sunday 30th 10am-6pm
Location: The Arts Centre, School of Art Building, Cnr Hereford St & Rolleston Ave, Christchurch
What to Bring: All materials will be provided, ensuring a stress-free experience.
Subjects covered:
Composition: How to use composition, proportion, and likeness to create a painting.
Color: How to mix paint to create secondary and tertiary colors, and how to use color theory to create complementary color combinations.
Texture: How to create texture in a painting.
Techniques: How to use various techniques to develop a painting, such as layered painting.
Materials: How to choose the right materials for oil painting, and how to care for brushes and palettes.
Workspace: How to create a comfortable and inspiring workspace.
Art history: How to learn about art history and art appreciation to provide context for your learning.
Working outside: How to work outside to create oil studies.
Cleaning up: How to clean up after a painting project.
The workshop will also include demonstrations, discussions, and feedback on work.
*If you have chosen the “Pay by Installments” option a $200.00 deposit is required at time of booking to secure your place, you will receive an email shortly after booking confirming you’re place along with account details and your preferred payment frequency options (weekly, fortnightly or monthly) for all remaining payments.
Please note: Total amount of your booking — $1000.00 for three days or $700.00 for two days — must be paid in full no later than 2 weeks before the workshop begins on March 28th 2025.
