The Royal Ontario Museum’s newest exhibition TATTOO: Ritual. Identity. Obsession. Art. opens April 2 to September 5, 2016. It’s an incredible collection of over 200 objects dedicated to this historical and cultural significance, as well as the art of tattooing. It’s gives insight into about 5000 years of inking bodies from different cultures and is more than skin deep and traces across continents over time. The word “tattoo” originated from the Polynesian word tatau as recorded by European explorers during the 18th centruy.

The Exhibition
Coming from the musée du quai Branly in Paris, where the exhibition received rave reviews, Tattoos: Ritual. Identity. Obsession. Art. explores the 5000-year-old multifaceted world of tattooing, showcasing a visual history of body art and markings, ancient tools, and commissioned tattooed silicone body reproductions, inked by some of the most respected tattoo artists in the contemporary world. Whether you’re drawn to the history and beauty of body art, a passionate member of the tattoo community, or someone who wants to understand the world of tattooing, come discover the ink beneath the skin.
'Stéphane Martin, president of that Paris institution, says he was "surprised by how serious tattoo artists can be," but impressed by their level of skill.
"I think they are technically great artists and extremely creative," he told CBC News.
He credits the curators with making it possible to really show off tattoos as an form that combines art and sculpture since tattoos are typically displayed in three dimensions on someone's body.
